Leptospirosis alert
By Michal Hess, DVM
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is an infectious bacterial disease that can be found in most mammals.
It is transmitted through urine of infected animals that contaminates water sources.
Is This a Problem on the East End?
Until recently it has been thought that Leptospirosis is not prevalent on the East End, but
unfortunately we are seeing more and more cases every year.
Can My Pets get Leptospirosis, and What Are the Signs ?
Drinking, swimming or walking through contaminated water can transmit the disease to dogs.
The bacteria enters the blood stream through cuts in the skin or through the mucous membranes.
It is contagious between dogs.
Cats are more naturally resistant to the disease and for that reason do not need to be vaccinated for it.
Clinical signs in dogs are a result of damage to the kidneys and liver, and are fever, anorexia, vomiting,
diarrhea, lethargy, jaundice and more.
Is Leptospirosis Contagious to Humans?
Yes, and it can cause severe ilness
We recommend vaccinating your dog yearly for leptospirosis. Call today to begin the series of vaccines.
